microwave cleaning

How many times have you tried to heat up your lunch only to find some hardened leftovers getting crusty on the walls of your microwave? Not only is it unsightly, but it is also a breeding ground for bacteria.

But once your microwave is dirty, it seems like the only way to clean it is with laborious elbow grease. If you don’t want your future to hold a lot of scrubbing, we have some tips and tricks for you.

Keep reading four our list of practical microwave cleaning hacks. These tricks will help you clean your microwave easily and quickly!

Steam it With Soap

When cleaning a microwave, steam is your friend. Nothing else will be able to loosen dried-on bits of leftover food like a good steam bath.

Find a microwave-safe bowl and fill it with two cups of water. Make sure the bowl isn’t filled all the way. The water will likely bubble in the microwave and you don’t want it to boil over.

Mix into the water two healthy squirts of grease-fighting dish soap. Once your soapy water is ready to go, put it in the microwave for two or three minutes. After the timer goes off, let it sit for five additional minutes.

After this soapy steam bath, most of the gunk in your microwave should be softened. You can wipe it away with a damp sponge or washcloth!

To prevent microwave build-up in the first place, you need to clean the space regularly. Don’t have time? Our team of professional cleaners can help you avoid ever having to deal with microwave gunk ever again.

Steam it With Lemon

If you have a lemon sitting in your refrigerator, you may want to try this neat cleaning hack. Find a microwave-safe bowl and fill it with three cups of water. Next, take your lemon and cut it into squeezable chunks.

Partially squeeze the lemon chunks into the bowl of water. Then drop the squeezed lemons in as well. The acid in the lemons will help you get the gunk out of your microwave in no time.

Microwave the bowl of lemon water for three to five minutes. Then let it sit for an additional five minutes. You should now be able to wipe away the debris in your microwave with a sponge or washcloth.

With this cleaning hack, you won’t just rid yourself of disgusting gunk and dangerous bacteria. The convenient bonus of this method is that your microwave is left with a fresh lemony scent!

Here’s a bonus tip for if your microwave is in very bad shape. You can also add a tablespoon of white vinegar to your lemon water. This will take this cleaning hack to the next level and help you obliterate the gunk in your microwave.

Spray it With Vinegar

When you don’t have any cleaning solution on hand but desperately need to clean your microwave, what are you going to do? You can open up your cupboard and pull out a bottle of white vinegar.

For this cleaning hack, you will only need white vinegar and a spray bottle. Fill the spray bottle with the vinegar, and thoroughly spray down your entire microwave.

Then close it and let it sit for anywhere from fifteen to twenty minutes. Once the vinegar has had time to interact with the grime, you can go in with a damp sponge or washcloth. You should be able to wipe the debris clean away.

The one thing you may notice about this hack is that it leaves your kitchen smelling like vinegar. Some people love this smell, but for others it can be a little overwhelming.

If that is the case for you, add a few drops of your favorite essential oil to the vinegar bottle. This can help balance out the intense smell without diluting your cleaning agent.

Use Some Window Cleaner

Here is another effective variation on the steam bath cleaning hack. Fill a microwave-safe bowl with one cup of water. Then add some window cleaner to the bowl.

Unscrew the cap of the window cleaner and pour for about two seconds. That should be enough.

Then microwave the bowl for two or three minutes. Let it sit for a few minutes afterward. Then, you should be able to wipe out the gunk in your microwave with a sponge or a washcloth.

Most window cleaners are not natural like vinegar and lemons. So you should take some care to avoid any possible ingestion of this substance. After your microwave is free of grime, wipe it down again with soapy water.

Bring Out The Baking Soda

Sometimes there are some bits of dried food that you just can’t seem to get rid of. Have you tried one or two of these hacks and still have some problematic spots? If that is the case, it is time to break out the baking soda.

Mix some baking soda with water until it becomes a malleable paste. Then use your finger or some other kind of applicator to paint it onto the problem areas. Wait ten or fifteen minutes for the paste to harden.

After the paste has hardened, you will be able to wipe away these problem spots with a damp sponge or washcloth. You will be surprised at how well it works!
