How do you decide?
Once upon a time, there were only two choices when it came to buying a new vacuum for your floors: upright or canister. Then the upright vacuum with onboard hose and tools came along. Ooooh! You must be a subscriber to access the specific brand ratings and recommendations. CR also tells a little bit about many of the major brands and the expected price range for their vacuums.
First decide which vacuum type will meet your needs:

♦ canister
♦ installed central vac system
♦ stick
♦ handheld
♦ or a robotic vacuum so you and your cat can mix cleaning with entertainment. (You’ve seen the videos, right?)
Then decide if you want to go bagless or not.
This choice alone is responsible for some pretty heated, and humorous, online conversation. You’ll read everything from, “I hate running out of bags for my vacuum and they’re such a waste! Plus I feel a sense of accomplishment when I see the dirt cup fill up!” to “Emptying the dirt cup is so messy and bad for my allergies! Plus I never, ever, ever have to see a spider again when I suck it up. Ever!”
